Welcome to part 2 of In The Know, our new blog series!
Continuing with this series’ focus of SEO, in this instalment we’re looking at why keywords are important, and how to implement them better on your website.
What Are Keywords?
In simple terms, keywords are what users are looking for when using search engines.
Why Are They Important?
If you want your business website to come up high in search engine results (who doesn’t!), then ensuring that your website includes keywords, as well as many other things that we will touch on in this series, is going to help you.
How Do I Use Them?
Using keywords is the best place to start. As an example, if you’re a graphic designer that specialises in working with small businesses, you need to have the words ‘small business graphic designer’ (or a term similar) throughout your website to start appearing in search engine results.
You’ll need to do some keyword research. Simple and obvious keywords like ‘small business graphic designer’ are often over-used, and the hardest to rank for (come up highly in the search results) – meaning lots of competition. Because of that, it’s important to use what’s called ‘long tail keywords’ too – these are more specific keywords, searched for less often, but likely to get a better result.
To help you with this, try using Google Keyword Planner . This tool by Google will help you identify more broad keywords that you might not have thought of using – after all, everyone searches for different terms on search engines.
Once you have a bank of keywords to use, it’s time to start incorporating them into your website and content! These can be included in areas such as:
- Headers and Sub-headers
- Main page content
- Link text
- Title tags
- META description and keyword tags
- Breadcrumbs
- ALT and TITLE attributes
- Embedded file names
