When it comes to your email subject line, it’s often one of the last things you think about when creating an email marketing campaign. However, it’s incredibly important and shouldn’t be an afterthought.
Your subject line is the first part of your email that a subscriber sees. Because of this, it needs to stand out and capture their attention straight away.
With that in mind, we thought we’d share some simple steps to help you write the perfect email subject line.
Keep It Short, Simple and to the Point
To help your email campaign stand out in crowded inboxes, your subject line needs to be short, simple and clear.
Aim for no more than 50 characters, including spaces. Highlight the main focus of your email, whether that’s:
-
An offer you’re running
-
A blog post you’re sharing
-
A new service you’re launching
Tease what’s inside your email without giving too much away. Place the most important words at the beginning and avoid unnecessary filler words.
Use Call to Action Words
Your subject line should motivate and intrigue recipients to click and read more.
Try including call to action words such as:
-

These phrases encourage engagement and help increase open rates.
Personalise with First Names
Personalisation is a great way to improve email open rates.
Using your recipient’s first name in the subject line can make your email feel more relevant and engaging. After all, emails that mention your name are often the ones that stand out most in a busy inbox.
Use Emojis Carefully
Emojis can help your subject line stand out and grab attention.
They’re modern, on trend and constantly evolving. Just make sure any emojis you use are relevant to the subject line and avoid using too many at once.
Avoid Overusing Capitals and Punctuation
There’s nothing more off-putting than seeing a subject line like this:
“LOOKING FOR HR SUPPORT??? 25% OFF ALL HR SERVICES – TODAY ONLY!!!!!!”
This type of subject line is more likely to be ignored or deleted. Overusing capital letters and punctuation can look like shouting and may even be seen as spam.
That said, capital letters, question marks and exclamation marks can still be effective — just use them sparingly.
Test, Test and Test Again
One of the keys to a successful email marketing campaign is testing and proofreading.
The same applies to your subject line. As the first thing your recipient sees, it needs to be professional and error-free. Spelling mistakes and errors can be off-putting and may prevent people from opening your email at all.
